ZKsync Association Membership Overview

Delegates can opt in to become a member of the ZKsync Association, an ownerless, non-profit association.

You can read more about the Association Membership here, find a copy of the Articles of Association here, or visit the governance docs.

Why have a membership model?

Risk and hesitancy around governance participation in general has been a hot topic over the previous years.

During the design, the team discovered the Austrian Association model which allows for a special type of membership, providing a novel model for any Delegate who would want to participate in the ZKsync Governance System.

Why become a member?

Members act as a body of the Association, respectively within the Association’s decision-making process. As a result, members enjoy a potential layer of liability protection while participating in ZKsync governance.(1)

How to become a member

This membership is available to Delegates who participate in governance through the (Tally) governance portal (vote.zknation.io).

Tally Popup: Today, anyone can acknowledge membership via a pop-up on Tally.

Check & change your status: As of today, February 2025, delegates can check or change membership status. Simply navigate to the ZKsync Delegate profile. There will be a screen similar to image below.

The “Edit” button allows delegates to select or unselect an “Active Delegate” box, confirming Association membership. Select “Save” in the top right corner.

Later, in the next months, anyone using the Tally governance portal (vote.zknation.io) may automatically be considered a member. The popup language will be adjusted to reflect this change once complete.

Personally I am very against this. I don’t want to be a member of some Swiss entity and be bound by its terms etc. And I don’t have a convenient way of exercising delegate functions outside of Tally (not even sure if it’s possible actually).

Hi Gabe: The Tally is a service provided primarily to the Austrian ZKsync Association members, as communicated on the front page of the portal since the launch in September. This is part of the regulatory requirements guidance.

Before this change, the governance team is working with Boardroom (recently acquired by Agora), such that anyone who chooses to opt out has an alternative interface for participation.

That being said, with recent regulation changes, I can check if this change is still necessary per the Association’s requirements regarding MiCAR.

In the meantime, you can find additional information about the benefits of membership at ZKsync Association Membership | ZK Nation. The Austrian ZKsync Association is designed specifically to address governance participation concerns of ZKsync partners, Matter Labs, and related investor community who act as ZKsync Delegates.
