Standing Delegate Call 26.11. - Thread

Back again already for the next Delegate call! :sparkles:

Below is the thread to gather discussion topics for the upcoming call. To stay on the existing call cadence, the next standing Delegate call will be in Tuesday, November 26th.

Please drop discussion topics for the call in this thread! The goal is to collaboratively curate the agenda by having Delegates propose discussion topics (with reasoning) in this thread. Others can “upvote” a topic by liking the different posts, which will help prioritize the items for the agenda.

I will update this forum post the day of the call with a proposed agenda based on results from the forum. I will use that agenda as a guide to help facilitate the call.

Check out the Standing Delegates Call post describing the focus, format, cadence and other details of these standing calls.

:writing_hand: AGENDA BASED ON THREAD

  • From last week: Alex G (founder of Matter Labs) will join to discuss the Elastic Chain vision (see this blog post) and role of Matter Labs in the ecosystem
  • 2 Active ZIPs: These are the very first protocol upgrades to ever pass through governance! Review ZIP proposal process here.
  • Open discussion on delegate incentives/rewards

I propose adding a point to the agenda: Open discussion on delegate incentives/rewards.

We can explore successful examples from other DAOs, align on our expectations, and brainstorm what might work best for ZK Nation.

Given the very first ZIPs are going through governance right now, I want to review the proposal process for ZIPs so folks know what to expect over the coming weeks!

The process for ZIPs is slightly different than for TPPs and GAPs given the Security Council approval, so I feel it is a good time to review this process.

I will also breifly mention / review the 2 active ZIPs.

:phone: :writing_hand: CALL NOTES / LINKS

Thanks to everyone who joined the Standing Delegate Call on Tuesday! Below is a collection of summarized notes and links shared in the call from yesterday.

:information_source: Check out the video description for timestamps on different discussion topics!

Actions

  • Alex will be publishing a blog post outlining in greater detail the roadmap of Matter Labs and what he feels ZKsync should be. He is aiming to have it published by next week.
  • Rafa & Shelby to continue discussion with Delegates around how the vision for Elastic Chain can help shape goals for governance.

Discussion

The main focus of this call was the discussion around the Elastic Chain vision that was led by Alex Gluchowski, the founder of Matter Labs. Alex joined to share his thoughts and ideas around the direction of the Elastic Chain and where ZKsync governance can help shape and nurture this vision. A few key points:

  • Alex reminds everyone the bigger picture behind why ZKsync was born: Main goal is to increasing freedom, Ethereum enables freedom, how can we scale Ethereum
  • The ZKsync protocol is 6 years old and the vision has evolved - now with clear mission to realize the Elastic Chain
  • If blockchain is meant to bring all value online (just like internet brought everything online), this cannot happen on a single chain. Elastic Chain aims create network that allows different chains to develop and to connect these chains in a seamless, secure way.

Elastic Chain Vision Q&A

:information_source: These questions were collected via Slido during the call. The answers below are summaries of Alex’s answers to each question.

Please watch the recording to get the full answers and further context around the answers to these question shared in the call!

What are top 5 short and mid-term priorities for ZKsync, in terms of achievements and measurable results?

  • TL;DR: Mission for the next year is to:
    – Make ZK rollups surpass all capabilities of optimistic rollups and realize the vision of the Elastic Chain. This includes: Developer experience, user experience, security, performance & interoperability.
    - Bring more chains to Elastic Chain to decentralize and strength network.
    - Achieve Stage 1 decentralization of Era

How does our Superchain vision differ from those of Polygon, Optimism, even Avalanche with their subnets? Other than inherent benefits ZK proofs bring.

  • TL;DR: Major differentiator at the aggregation layer is the maturity of the ZKsync interop solution and of the ZK stack overall. ZKsync is natively secure at the protocol level and won’t run into certain scaling issues other projects might given the nature of the Elastic Chain.

What is the vision for Era amongst the other ZK chains?**

  • TL;DR: Era is the only ZK rollup across the chains building on the Elastic Chain, which means it is the only place that is fully Ethereum-aligned and only chain that can have applications that require ultimate security of a ZK rollup. This positions Era to be the hub for governance and the hub for interoperability.

Where can we find the list of ZK Chains we should know about?

  • The Matter Labs team is currently building an “Elastic Chain” explorer where all chains will be visible.
  • Tweet coming next week from ZKsync X account highlighting the chains and major projects.

How do you imagine ZK chains leveraging interop? What do you imagine being the bulk of interop transactions?

  • TL;DR: The main usecase for crypto today is payments and swaps. Interop will support very fast, very low-cost transfers from day 1.

What types of token programs and token mechanics could help accelerate the elastic chain vision?

  • In the last Delegate call (see notes), the role of the Token Assembly in the context of the Elastic Chain Vision was described as the following:
    - Accelerate the development, secure deployment, adoption of protocol upgrades.
    - Accelerate the activation of ZK Chains.
    - Accelerate the development of flagship applications for each of the ZK Chains.

Rafa and I will be speaking more to this in the coming weeks and will try to produce some writing that helps outline these points in more detail to help connect the dots for folks.

Are [protocol] upgrades for all of the chains in the Elastic Chain controlled by ZK Nation?

  • TL;DR: The ZKsync Governance System governs the ZKsync protocol, which includes ZKsync Era. The ZKsync protocol controls ZKsync Era and other ZK chains as parts of the ZK chain ecosystem. It means governance can upgrade certain parts of the ZKsync protocol (e.g. bridges, State Transition Manager, Era or other ZK Chains). Rafa and Shelby are clarifying the details and specifics here with key protocol engineers and will share more on this ASAP.

How do we ensure continuous alignment between ZKsync governance and ZK Chains/builders?

  • TL;DR: We should be focused on minimizing governance and maximizing freedom. Focus on building best ZK stack and distribution network that everyone wants to join. We can look at examples of other players in the ecosystem to develop the best token mechanisms to achieve this.

Beyond the two dozens chains expected, what is the long-term vision for Elastic Chain’s ecosystem growth? Are there specific verticals in focus?

  • TL;DR: There is a lot of potential in focusing on developing or where tangible impact can be made on local markets.

Proposal Review: ZIP-001 & ZIP-002

[ZIP-001] Protocol Defense: This ZIP is a proposal to deploy quality of life improvements and optimizations for ZKsync Era. The changes focus on refactoring the codebase to enhance readability, maintainability, and gas efficiency.

:ballot_box: Voting is currently live for this proposal! Please vote by Wednesday, Dec 4th!

No outstanding questions raised on call.

[ZIP-002] Reduce the execution delay from 21 hours to 3 hours: This ZIP proposes to reduce the execution delay on ZK Chains from the current 21 hours to 3 hours, enhancing transaction finality while maintaining security through the oversight of the newly established Security Council.

:ballot_box: Voting for ZIP-002 will open on Monday, December 2nd at ~13:12 UTC

Key question discussed: How can we rely on the Security Council to respond within 3 hours? What is the notification and response system in place? (starting around 43:06 in recording)
